Tyre size?

Options
Hi,

In my car owner's manual, there listed two tyre sizes:
175/65R14 82H, and
185/65R14 86H
Could anyone tell me what's the difference? They are quite different it seems

Thanks

    What car is it?

    One is likely to be for a sportier version as it is a slightly wider and higher rated tyre.

    What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • 175 and 185 are the section heights of the tyre.

    No it's the width. The height or profile is the 65 bit (65% of the width)

    The 185 is wider, which some people prefer as it can give more grip.

    It's also 1.3cm more in diameter, which is negligible.

    The 82 and 86 are load ratings. A higher load rating when all other things are equal means a stiffer sidewall which again some people prefer as it can give a nicer feel and a sportier ride, but what it's actually intended to mean is...

    82 = 475kg per corner = 1900kg
    86 = 530kg per corner = 2120kg

    So unless the combined weight of your car, occupants and luggage are going to be over 1900kg, don't worry about the load rating.

    It's possible that these two sizes are for hatchback vs estate.

    TBH, on a non-sporty car, unless I needed that extra 220kg of carrying capacity, I'd just go with whichever tyre size is cheapest. You'll get greater variance in handling and grip by changing brands than by changing between these two sizes.
  • Thanks for all the information.

    Originally I was puzzled why they gave two sizes without giving any guidance. Now I assume they apply to estate or hatchback.

    BTW, it's toyota

    Well done that's twice today.

    Yaris then at that size?

    As lum pointed out (thus saving you the effort of clicking the link :) ) The two tyres are rated for higher weight. The profiles will be slightly different as it is 65% of 185 or 65% of 175 so the handling could be slightly different but it won;t make a huger difference.

    See what is on offer. It is worth noting as we head to the end of the year though that skinner tyres tend to be better in bad conditions as wider ones are more likely to sit on top of snow etc (bit like snow shoes).

    Again, the difference will be marginal but worth a consideration when looking at pricing.

    The manual shows 175 and 185. 175 for steel wheels and 185 for alloys possibly?

    Never mind that. What do you actually have fitted?

    Fit the same, Unless someone fitted a different size at each corner.
