What on earth is this?
Ok so I know it is a sunflower of some sort, I got a huge pack of seeds from Poundland and just chucked them in.
This one is about 7ft tall; however, as you can see, the flowers are pathetic and I am a little disappointed. There is multiple flower heads on the plant.
Is it possible the bad weather has caused this? the other plants grew to approx 5-6ft and had multi flowers on in dark yellow and purples.

It's probably just a reversion to type. Most flower seeds you buy are selected strains of wild species, but it's quite common for the odd plant to revert, or double flowers to turn out single and so on.
Perhaps it's a built-in defence against over-development. After all, a sunflower with a massive head would just fall over!0 -
I'd be happy with it - many flowers still to come out on the side shoots, maybe just take off some of the largest leaves so you can see the flowers, but the flowers will be great for cuttingYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

Could it be a jerusalem artichoke? They are related to the sunflower and the ones in my garden have lots of small flower heads.DMP Mutual Support Thread No. 421

We have a random sunflower in our garden at the moment, also with a very small head. However, someone nearby has a bird table and I think it's an escapee from that. Obviously, for seed, no-one is going to worry about the size of the flower.
I was going to pull it out as I don't have yellow in the garden, but then I saw the number of visiting bees and hoverflies and repented.
For now.0 -
I did sunflowers a few years back. Most gew tall with a single flower, But a couple had several flowers on, Fairly close to the main stem.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Sorry for the late reply, locked myself out of my account and the captcha wouldn't work to reset my password

Mr Sunflower is still there, none of the other heads have opened; however I don't expect them too after we had winds so strong he was toppled over as he snapped the string that was holding him to the fence. He was completely uprooted!
Tied him back up and he is doing ok but expect he is at his best.0 -
