paypal with USA funds problem

I recently sold an item to a USA buyer who paid with paypal USD which went into my paypal account as US dollars.
I purchased an item in the UK today because I thought I had sufficent funds in my paypal account. But when the payment was completed it just took the money I had in UK sterling funds and the rest of the payment was made from my credit card. The US funds remain in the account?
So if this happening how do I use the US funds?

On the top of the box that shows you how much money you have in £ and $ there should be a link saying manage currency or something. I think it allows you to change it into £s-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

HORRIBLE. They use a wider spread than even the worst UK bank. Plus if the original US funds are ever reversed, then they get sucked back at an equally horrible rate - so basically double jeopardy."Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."0
