Insurance claim if over mileage

Hi,

I was involved in an accident this morning where a guy drove into the back of me whilst waiting at a roundabout. The damage to my car seemed minimal and his was a scratch so he offered to settle it privately if i get a quote for the work.

Im a bit sceptical and since this morning im suffering more with whiplash which i've been to A+E for. Im not going to have time off work to try and build an injury claim but i think i would prefer to go through my insurance now than sort privately.

However i've gone over my mileage estimate by 4k so im concerned this is going to invalidate my insurance. Do they check your mileage as i've never given them the exact figure and does it even matter if im going to be claiming off the 3rd parties insurance?

Some help would be much appreciated!!!

All you need to do is inform your Insurance company 'For Information Only' and deal directly with the Third party Insurance. Its far simpler that way.

Dont, under any circumstances deal with it privately. You will be breaching the terms and conditions of your own insurance.

Ask your own insurance company for help with the personal injury claim, they will point you in the right direction.

Dont claim through your own ins. company, it just adds time and stress.

Like I say, deal directly with the other parties insurance co.. Your mileage is irrelevant.

This is the way it should work.
The other party should inform their insurance company
The other insurance party should contact you, if not contact them

They tell you to take it for a quote
    Garage emails them a quote
The instruct the garage to repair
    Garage repairs it
You pick it up and go home
Insurance company pays the garage direct.
    Simple as that.

Claim from your own ins. company, you will be paying excess, claiming it back yourself as an uninsured loss, time, stress
    etc, etc. etc.

Claim off the other person's insurance.

Also check your policy documents, particularly the schedule. If it's been done via a broker they often ask about estimated mileage and then put you with an insurer that does not care about that estimate and does not list it on the schedule.

There's also a huge difference between estimated mileage and a police with an annual mileage limit, the latter being more common with classic cars.

Hmmm....think I'll keep out of this might get too cross otherwise.
  • Minimum damage at low speed. Has a chat with someone and now the whiplash.

Known in the Insurance industry as "The Pub Effect".

Whiplash symptoms normally show the following morning...
  • I don't think you'll find I had a 'chat' with anyone nor am I interested in compensation. I just want to ensure I'm not left out of pocket by all this!!!

Thanks to those who offered constructive advice. I have had my car assessed and there is nearly 600 quids worth of work needed so doubt they will want to settle privately anymore anyway.

Final question....do you know if there is a time limit on reporting the accident to the insurance company? Tomorrow morning will be 48 hours....
  • You need to tell them even if you are not claiming.

Just tell them as soon as you possibly can.
    You'll be okay
    Good luck.
