Bad back mattress

I suffer from lower back problems and want to invest in a new mattress. £300 is about my limit.

My early contender is:

Any advice as to the mattress or where/how to get the best deal most welcome.

Thanks guys.

  • all I can say is why they think extra firm mattresses actually help back pain I will never know. I have L5 disc problems and lower back muscle spasms and hard mattresses make the pain much worse for me. Memory fooam and pocket sprung with latex and memory foam pillow top have eased the pain in my back over the last 3 years. My advice is try everything out properly in a shop, take your time laying down on each mattress for 5-10 minutes in each sleeping position you use, a good mattress is an investment and itds worth taking your time over choosing the right one. Good luck

    Totally agree with Welsh Totster.

A firm mattress is one of the worse kind for a bad back. Too hard and your lower back which you say is giving you trouble, will NOT even be touching the mattress. It'll be you bottom and your shoulders.

    You need support!

You only get support from a mattress that moulds around your body.

You should pick up a pocket sprung mattress even topped with memory if you want for around £300.

Do not confuse support and firmness, they are 2 different things all together.

As for your Silentnight recommendation, Miracoil 3 is their entry level model and won't be very good.

    How about this model?

To compare how expensive Silentnight are this is a firm pocket sprung mattress.

Only good to you if your 16 stone plus really.

i get an occasional sore lower back so change bed to a tempur was alot of money but imho well worth it proper memory foam rocks!
if you could stretch to 399 you could get an ergoflex which is a similar spec (using different materials and design but still the same thickness for foam and bottom) and nearly a third of the price

your going to spend upto a third of your day in bed its worth a little extra investment

Oh and I both used to get back problems and its made a massive difference going over to a memory foam one- no way I would buy any other again. Also for me as an asthmatic it has really reduced those times when I used to wheeze away through the night.

We used memorymattress.co.uk and it was great service, it was delivered rolled up and as per their instructions you roll it out on the bed and it takes a couple of hours to puff up to full size.

TBH it was so good we covinced MIL and FIL to get one. He is in a wheelchair with a number of issues and is a big chap. They kept getting mattresses every few years, but he struggled to sleep and mil kept complaining about "roll together". The new matress has changed their sleeping habits, after the first night they said it was the best nights sleep they had, had for 20 years.
They even went back and got matress toppers for when they go on holiday.

Sounds dramatic, but its made a huge difference to them. FIL used to sit up on 6 or 7 pillows struggling to sleep all night long. He went from that to normal sleep on 2 pillows.

I have a lower back problem (stenosis) which caused sciatica.
The memory foam mattress which I bought has made a remarkable improvement to my condition.
I don't care that it is much firmer than the old sprung type mattress as I am now almost free from taking pain killers.
Bought it from Bensons Beds - after some negotiating got it reduced from £380 to £175.
A truly life changing purchase and, if I had known the effect that this was going to have, I would have gladly added a nought to the cost.
    Forgotten but not gone.

Thanks for the replies. I do have a Tempur pillow and it's fantastic. I would go for memory foam, but the Ergoflex model for my bed 6' x 6'6" is £589! But I guess if you're using it for a third of your life it will be a good investment.

At least I know now not to get a HARD mattress. My probs are degeneration at L1/L2 and L5/S1, btw. And I am around 16 stone.

Also, the bed I have is a pine-slatted bed. Would the memory foam lay straight on top of the wooden slats, or would it be better to put a cheap mattress underneath the foam, as I see the foam is only 9cm deep, which doesn't sound a lot!?
  • Te mattress will be thicker overall than 9cm! That is just the memory foam layer and to be hinest is probably at the upper end of how much memory foam you would actually want on a mattress

We have a pocket sprung amttress topped with 7 cm of memory foam and it has been brilliant

BLIMEY! Measure twice and cut once! Just remeasured my bed frame and it is 5 foot and not 6 foot wide!

Just rechecked site, thanks to sunshinetours, total mattress depth is 21cm - my existing one is only 19"!

Which brings the cost down to £449. For a Tempur standard mattress, with a 10-year guarantee!

Which means fat Freddie Bear cat will spread himself out and hog it even more! :rotfl:

I think we've got a winner. Thanks for all your input, guys. Very helpful. :T
  • Yay! Another top tip is to see what the bed shop has for sale thats ex display. We had a sleepmasters sensaform memory foam mattress on our superkingsize bed and it was extra comfy, we wanted to change the mattress on the guest bed (a kingsize) and went back to sleepmasters (Bensons) and found the exact same mattress in a kingsize that was ex display. we paid £180 for it if we rolled it up and took it away in the car there and then, the full price of the mattress was £800. the guest bed is now as comfy as our main bed! so keep an eye out for ex display, you could get more luxury for your money that way, and a better back for it too!
