Using pre-loads abroad - beware

in Credit cards
Hi, I'm new to posting so hope this is the right place and all that.
Our son took out a Caxton pre-loaded card for Camp America as it was the card they advised and it appeared on Martins site too. Whilst we topped up the card regularly our son was hardly able to use it. It didn't work in any shops and spasmodically in ATMs. He had to borrow from friends and repay them when he got the card to work. This left him destitute one night whilst alone travelling, unable to get a hotel, eat or get to the airport to come home. We had to phone a hotel from the UK to pay for a room even though he had £600 on the card. Did Caxtons help? They didn't want to know. He's come home with still £600 on the card and can you get the money back off it? No, of course you can't. Beware.

Alot of the prepay cards are online authorised so there is a good chance they wont work due to alot of terminals being offline0

From what I remember from reading here on the forum, you should choose to put transactions through as a credit card when in the USA.0
