Free or cheap shipping

I run a registered charity https://www.aidfornepalichildren.org.uk (reg no 1117730)to help poor children in Nepal. I want to get donated clothes to Nepal. Does anyone know of a shipping company that might help get them there.

On a recent visit I took a suitcase full of clothes but if you had seen the looks on the faces of the children that didn't get anything then you would know why I am trying to get more out there.

thanks Dave

  • Sorry, I do not have an answer but I am looking for an answer to the same question. I want to ship out some educational books that I want to donate to schools in Nepal and am looking for a cheap method of shipment. I will be looking to see if anyone has an answer for you!

There probably is no economical way to ship small quantities of goods to Nepal, a landlocked country.

Tools for Self Reliance sends 20 cubic meter containers of refurbished hand tools and sewing machines to Africa. We pay £2000 - £3000 per container plus in-country transport costs. This is only cost effective because the tools are a high value item and very expensive in Africa.

Second hand clothing are a low value item for the weight and bulk. Much of the second hand clothing collected in this country by charities is sold by weight to bulk exporters who pack it tightly in bales for shipment to poor countries. There, it is sold in local markets. I have bought clothes there myself when traveling -- there's usually plenty of large sizes for me.

It would probably be more effective to sell the clothing you have here at a boot sale. Then use the money to purchase second hand clothing at the market in Nepal. You may find wholesale dealers in Nepal selling new but surplus or imperfect clothing from the garment assembly industry that exists there. You would need a Nepalese buyer to get a good price.

Another possibility for small quantities would be to contact travel agencies offering Nepal tours to see if they would ask their clients to carry bags for you. Be careful -- the logistics of this may be complicated.

Sorry to not be of more help.

Thanks for the info Larry. I suspected that this was the case but you never know what may turn up.

    Hey Dave,

    FANTASTIC WORK- Well Done.

I Don't Have An Easy Answer Either I'm Afraid But With The New Laws In Place Regarding Travel, I Don't Think You Will Be Able To Get Other People To Carry Your Luggage.

The Best Thing I Can Think Of Is To Use The "Backing Of The Lucky 777's" When Writing Adding The MSE Website & Try To Ask Airlines & Freight Companies If They Would Assist.

It Could Be A 'Sitting Down & Writing Letters' Chore To EVERYONE You Can Think Of. The Only Thing I Keep Thinking Of Is That First Class Passengers Get A Larger Weight Allowance Then Regular Passengers That Very Rarely Gets Used, If You Could Tap Into That Market Or Use It As Leverage With Airlines?!? Could Help.

Write A Letter To Conde Nast Business Travller Could Be A Starting Point?

I'm Sorry I Haven't Answered Your Question With Ease But Wish You All The Luck In The World & If You Need Any Further Help, Please PM Me.

    Good Luck,

    Kindest Regards,

    Nick.
