Painting over gloss wood panelling?

We have wood panelling over our kitchen wall and need to repaint it. It's not peeling or in bad condition, but the colour makes the room look much smaller. It's a gloss paint.
Is there any way I can repaint it without having to sand it down? Being a kitchen, and quite a small one, sanding would be an absolutely nightmare and almost enough to put me off doing it.
Would I be able to just use a primer underneath? If so, should I go for a particular brand/type of base?
Thank you.

Just use undercoat and then some gloss paint of your choice. I found wilkos undercoat quite good and reasonable0

I did consider doing that, but from previous experience I've found that it starts to peel after a while if the gloss isn't 'de-glossed' before painting over. I'm also not entirely keen on using gloss paint again on it unless I have to.
I've seen this: http://www.tesco.com/direct/nitromors-all-purpose-paint-varnish-remover-375ml/734-2358.prd?sc_cmp=pcp_GSF_Painting+%26+Decorating_734-2358
(although I'd need to order a larger size elsewhere)
and was wondering if that would be the type of thing I needed, or whether it's just a gimmick for something I could do cheaper in a different way?0 -
B&Q used to sell a product in the decorating aisle called liquid sand.. it is ideal for your situation. You simply rub down the paint with a cloth.0

You need to provide a key or it will just peel.
Hand sanding does not produce clouds of dust. But you could use wet and dry paper (use it wet).0
