.....if you can afford an amount of money to get NO RETURN go for Premium Bonds.
I would go further and say only do it if you can afford to lose money. Even if you get some return, it is statistically likely that the return is less than inflation - i.e. lose money.

If you are considering Halifax anyway, are you aware of their free monthly prize draw that offers savers the opportunity to win up to £100,000 each month. Similar to Premium Bonds but with the advantage of offering this in addition to paying interest on your underlying balance. Slight catch is that you need to have a minimum of £5,000 to be eligible but you can register with a lower balance and should you balance grow above £5,000 you will be automatically be entered. Check out halifax.co.uk/savings/savers-prize-draw/ for more details. Note the top prizes for the December 2012 draw have been increased from 3 x £100,000 to 3 x £250,000! May as well register - nothing to lose?0
