Present for an Anglophile

Hi all

I'm trying to come up with a present for the American dad of a friend who's a bit (a lot) of an Anglophile.

He's a great guy and has let us stay at his place in the States on a number of occassions, picked us up from the airport & dropped us off aqnd also done a lot of driving around when we are over there.

I've reciprocated with dinners etc while we are there, but would like to send a random present to say thanks and show my general appreciation without it seeming to be linked to him doing me a favour IYSWIM?

He loves British tv (fave shows are Downton Abbey and Top Gear), buys Cornish pasties from a place that pretends to do them three states away and eats beans for breakfast.

I have thought of the Upstairs, Downstairs boxset as he has never seen them - http://www.amazon.com/Upstairs-Downstairs-Complete-Anniversary-Collection/dp/B004H0ZHD4/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1348013803&sr=1-1&keywords=upstairs+downstairs

Hamish MacBeth - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_7?url=search-alias%3Dmovies-tv&field-keywords=hamish+macbeth&sprefix=hamish+%2Caps%2C198

Open to any suggestions MSE'ers :)may have, especially any other sites based in the US.

thanks in advance

  • Boxset of Blackadder?
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

There's a lot of British themed stuff in the shops right now, being a guy he might not appreciate all the home furnishing type stuff that my sister in Canada puts in her house to remind her of home, like flag themed stuff, but you could have a look and see if anything takes your fancy. She has a pair of union jack oven gloves - and every one needs them! :)

Or I agree with the above - Blackadder!

I used to have a friend in the States who loved all things British, and he loved anything to do with the Beatles.
  • Failing Blackadder how about Monty Python and some proper English fudge?

my overseas inlaws are the same, Downton and Top Gear are their favourites too. FIL loves British classic car magazines.

They also like Doc Martin ( never watched it ) and Lewis. They also like anything period, so I've sent them over Call the Midwife and movies like the Duchess and Pride and Prejudice. They also like Michael McIntyre. My MIL was also desperate to get hold of a Harrods bag (cringe). I've sent younger relatives overseas things like the IT Crowd and Gavin and Stacey that seem to have gone down well.
  • Before rushing out and buying UK sourced DVDs you might want to check that your friend has a multisystem TV and region free DVD player that will be able to play PAL broadcasts (the USA uses NTSC).

Alternatively you could order them direct from the BBC America Shop where the DVDs will be suitable for the USA. These will then get delivered direct to your friend.

    Hope this helps.
  • It's kind of tacky, (scrap that, it's completely tacky) but what about one of those Lord/Laird/Lady titles?

    Lord or Lady title £19.99
"Most of the people ... were unhappy... Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -- Douglas Adams
  • British sweets and chocolate are apparently totally different to US stuff. My brother often sends and receives boxes of a variety of chocolate with his American friends. All their stuff seemed based around peanuts!

Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes are painfully British. Anything with Stephen Fry in it. A subscription to Best of British magazine?
  • I've done a few swaps with friends across the pond. I sent one a mish mash of British bits. Biscuits from M&S, sturdy M&S shopping bag, tea towel from my town, Yorkshire teabags, cream crackers, lots of different types of sweets and chocolate (she and her friends raved about Galaxy and said it was far better than anything they get over there). It was the time of the Royal wedding so included some newspapers showing the wedding.
Keep a close eye on the parcel weight tho....I can't remember the limits but first attempt it would have cost me £60!!!
