Just closed my Paypal account

Ok, so I am not an experienced ebayer but I just sold an expensive item which is for pick up only. Then while speaking to friends, I was told that if I am paid through paypal and the buyer picks up the item, he/she could open a claim of non-receipt of item and I lose both my money and the item!!!!! as I can not prove sending the item to buyer.

I then searched the net and found it littered with similar stories. I have emailed the buyer to request payment on collection. In the original auction I didn't specify payment method. But I feared that the buyer would pay through paypal and I'd be stuck with it, having to part with the item without proof.

So I decided that since paypal can not provide me protection I best close it and be done with it. It's probably an overreaction but in this instance I can't risk it as the item is worth a lot.

So my paypal account is now closed. I suppose this means it no longer accepts anyone trying to pay to it? Thanks

I assume from this you still have the item.

Wouldn't it of been easier to come to an agreement with them.

Cash on collection, or take a small loss and you would post it trackable (if they want to pay by paypal).

    Um, yes? Seems fairly obvious....
  • It also means you can't list anything else on eBay as you have to accept paypal as a payment method - even if you don't use it for every transaction

Well not necessarily. Sometimes money can still go through for a period of time after closure. I was wondering if paypal is like that.

I still have the item but won't be able to post it. It's not postable!

As I said, I am new to ebay and lack experience. Although I didn't specify paypal as method of payment, I didn't specify cash on collection either.

What are you going to do if they turn up and pay by cheque?

Hopefully then, the buyer will be happy to pay cash (or agree to cancel the transaction) and leave it at that.

However, you will still have your eBay fees to pay (unless you can get the buyer to cancel), which are probably set to be paid automatically though Paypal.

Once you have sorted this with the buyer, then you will have to do a one off payment through ebay, or try to add a new Paypal account (must admit, I don't know how happy eBay/Paypal will be about the way you have done this).
  • As above paypal fees, What will ebay do when they spot you no longer have a paypal account?

Restrict ebay or close your ebay account? I think you have been a bit hasty.

If they paid by paypal you refund them simple.

Payment can still be made as the paypal id is still 'valid'. Paypal will either accept the payment which leaves you in a pickle trying to get back into your paypal account to refund it, or it will show as unclaimed.

Either way you are going to have a very annoyed buyer who has the potential to leave a neg, plus lots of lovely fees to be paid

It's ok. I have been on contact with the buyer and he is happy to pay cash on collection. I think he understands that cheques are not acceptable. If he does offer, I can refuse to part with the item. Simple.

Regarding the ebay fees, I hadn't thought of that. I will have t reopen my paypal account.
