Am I allowed to spend money given as a gift?

Hi,
I get help with HB and CTB other benefits I get aren't means tested.
I'm been given some money which will just bring me over the lower savings allowance this added to the money I already have in the bank, this money is a kind gift. It is from a relative who has just sadly died I wasn't named in the will but her spouse wanted to treat my little family to some cash.
What do I do now? Am I allowed to spend this money? We are getting the money within the next couple of weeks. Should I just sign off from HB?
I would really like a new car, as the one I've got isn't safe to carry my children around in, I've had it many years I do need transport as my child is ASD and we have many appointments to attend.
I just want to do the right thing and no trouble from DWP.

or ask for the gift to be given as cash, once you buy the car you will still be entitled to HB so I can't see the need to worry.
Tell this person you are getting the money off to agree it's for a car so you are really being given a car instead of money, then no problem again.0 -
youre fine - its a gift.
if its not a taxable income you dont need to worry

Thanks.
It can't be given in cash as they have a Business so I think need it to be seen on paper.
I just worry that my savings will now be over £6,000 and if I buy a new car will it been seen as deprivation of capital as to continue to get help with HB and CTC.0 -
Ask the relative to buy you a car rather than giving you the money?0

when I was on ESA I had saving of £16.000 and they never went into where the money was spent.
Buying a car, it would be very hard for that to be seen as deprivation of capital.
Buy the car and enjoy it.0
