Can you trust Tax Credits to get it right?

I haven't done very well with the TCO

They pay it, then they take it back. Fairly consistently for several years now they have paid then changed their minds.

They have told me they have done a 'major review' & I am entitled to Tax Credits and back pay

So do I believe them? I am a little sceptical I think they will ask for it back the day after I spend it.

So spend or save & wait for them to as for it back?

Best way is to make sure you understand the rules so you know what you're entitled to!
  • Complicated as it's a really obscure issue bout defining income.

My DH has a PHI (permanent health insurance - a sort of income protection thing) & they have always counted it as income & now they are saying it isn't

Yes looks like it shouldn't be counted (assuming it isn't taxable):

  • So they are right?

So back in 2003 when they paid me, then took if off me they were wrong

& when they told me to put it in the other income box (& take £300 off) they were wrong

So for 9 years I have struggled and scrimped & saved when I could have had enough money to change our lives

    Damn

I bet I'll have to fight to get back all that money

Sounds like you've got a case if they incorrectly told you to declare it. Might be worth contacting one of the charities like TaxAid or the LITRG, or maybe see the CAB.
  • Thank you Zagfles - I would never have found that document or realised those organisation existed

I think I might cry - it is SO much money

    Life changing amounts

Good luck! It sounds like they've admitted their mistake so you're probably half way there... Icequeen on this board is really good with this sort of thing so post here if you have problems and look out for her...
  • Thanks - I really appreciate it
  • Well I asked my MP to check it- it's mine

I asked CAB to check it - it's mine

& I asked Tax aid to check it - it's mine & if they ask for it back as an overpayment I have taken all reasonable steps to check it was mine before I spent it

So I think I am safe

    What shall I buy?
