Buyer Rights when purchasing a used car from a dealer

Last service was probably carried out at in indy anyway so won't have been picked up by the BMW system anyway. I reset the service lights on my car myself.0

Goes to prove that a service history is just scrap paper.
Doesnt show what's actually been done. Shows a poorly cared for car.
If they didnt change the engine oil at less than the manufacturers limits then i wouldnt have bought it.
My current car had its oil changed at less than 8000 miles instead of the recommended 12,000 miles.
An owner that cares for his car.
Oil change how much? Nah leave it.
Wonder if its the same oil it left the factory with?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Could have been serviced, but the system not reset.
Newer (2005 onwards) BMW's wont let you reset them unless they are showing amber/red.
However, if you change the date on the cars computer to a few months in the future, it will then let you reset the service lights.0 -
The issue ares:
- Change of brake fluid (due in March)
- Oil change (due in April)
- Micro filter change (April)
- Air Filter (April)
- Fuel Filter (April)
The dealer is taking you for a ride (excuse the pun).
Many of these items can be done yourself. Or you can take it to a non-dealership garage and get them done for anything from £60-£100 depending on where you go.
Even mainstream garages will service a car (full service) for < £200.
If these are seriously the only issues they can find to try extract more money from you, then consider yourself lucky. I think most would have expected you to be complaining about components on the verge of failure (clutch, flywheel, injectors etc for example)... not merely serviceable items.
If you have these items done, you will not be able to recover the cost because a) you didn't give the dealer opportunity to rectify it b) the costs are not 'reasonable' c) you haven't tried to mitigate your losses (ie get several quotes) and finally and probably most important bit d) don't necessarily constitute a fault - especially if the service book doesn't show it was services in April.0 -
I've got an X5 and keep up with a full BMW main dealer service history and I have never been charged prices like that......the servicing prices for older cars at the main dealers are relatively reasonable IMO. You could phone around to get comparative prices from more than one dealer to check. Also check with a BMW independent if the main dealer service history isn't that important to you. TBH, it sounds as if the main dealer service history may be a bit lacking and with the age of the car, indy prices will save you a lot.
I agree that none of the issues you have mentioned are actually "problems" with the car, they are just ongoing service issues and I wouldn't think there is any comeback on the dealers unless they sold the car to you as "fully serviced" or "just been serviced as well, sir" as it clearly hasn't.
EDIT:
Checked my last BMW invoices: brake fluid change (2 yearly service interval) was £78.
Full Service which included the other items you mentioned was £390.
Dunno how that adds up to £750 ......... and that's work done by a Main Dealer this year.0 -
The issue ares:

So basically, its due a service then?
Ask the trader you bought it from did they service it and perhaps didnt reset the lights, OR if not, as it was overdue when you bought the car, ask them would they consider servicing it for you or making a contribution?
I dont think you can insist in getting it done at a main dealers though.0
