Did you notice that this thread is nearly SIX YEARS OLD?

I wish you all the luck in the known universe in getting most of the major PC manufacturers of the world to change their policies, and provide a Windows boot disk.

Especially when they say in LARGE UNFRIENDLY LETTERS to make a bootable recovery CD/DVD immediately after you power the new PC/laptop up for the first time...

Simple John.....I don't buy 'own brand' computers any more. (The one I did buy, was an offer too good to pass up, but I wished I had, later.) That's the Desk Top sort anyway.
Buy it cheaper without Windows, and buy the Windows disc seperately.
I should say, that a recovery disc is no use, if the computer has changed.......Windows will see it as a different PC, and won't allow installation, AND all the drivers etc, will be the wrong ones for the new PC, and will foul that up as well, were Windows to allow installation.
  • Another quick-tip for everybody. Input the space bar before and after your password adding two characters to your password.

This will confuse people who look over your shoulder physically for your password. It will also help against Brute-force software in the slim chance your ever victim to it.

Thats because the PC comes with a OEM copy of windows the boot CD is not supposed to work on another machine as thats breaking the licensing agreement and illegal

I tend to aim for passwords in the form of (using Martin's name as an example) "M4127!nL£w!$" and for important logins it will always be at least 20 characters long "M4127!nL£w!$M0n£y$4v!n9£><p£127".

The most infuriating thing is when a site then tells you that you may only use letters and numbers "M41271nL3w1s" and it's nearly always the sites you want to have the most secure login possible.
  • I have two DOBs - my real one and the one I use for comps. There is no way I am going to give out important ID information just to enter a comp.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

I use Keepass for my passwords which is excellent. It can generate random passwords and they can be very complex because you don't need to remember them.

I copy my keepass file to a stick and email it to myself about once a week or when I change it.

One password to unlock the file which obvisously needs to be very strong but that's not too difficult to remember. Mixing two words and a number, if poss incorporating a symbol or two is sufficent.

(edit, in agreement with posters above which I hadn't read on page 2. also, I hate it when web pages want characters 2, 6 & 7 so you can't just copy & paste.)
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc
