Poorly dog tum advice

Hi

Anyone got any tips on how to help our Miniature Schnauzer.

He's got a extremely poorly tummy with sickness and then diaroheas to the point he was passing dribbles of blood/mucus every 20 mins through the day and night over the weekend.

Went to the emergency vets on Sunday evening where they gave him a painkiller and Canikur to help his tum but didn't think it was gsatro enteritus (which he has had before) but just advised no food and if it didn't clear up to go back to our own vets,

So back at our own vets Monday am who gave an anti emetic and another painkiller jab then some rehydrating fluid we've been giving him. About 10ml every hour

The diaorehea seems to have stopped now just emitting horrendous smells :( but he's totally lethargic and just sleeping.

Me and my son are taking shifts looking after him 24 hours ( I get the 2 to 8 shift!). Our own vet did suggest taking him in to put him on a drip to assist recovery which is what they did last time and if he doesn't perk up soon I may do that.

Anyone got any better ideas / thoughts/ advice please.

I would have to say this is one for the vets IMO - the lethargy doesn't sound too good and think I would pop him to the vet this morning if he were my dog.

Definitely a trip to the vets. I find boiled chicken and rice good for an upset tummy but I think your poor boy's symptoms require professional treatment.

I hope he feels better soon x
  • I agree with the above, this dog needs the vets specialist care.
  • Sorry but as you've already sought vet treatment (which is great and of course what should be done), I'm afraid I don't see how anyone on a forum could provide better advice ...... please go back to the vet.

Hope he's on the road to recovery soon, it's awful when they're ill

  • My dog has had a bit of a poorly tummy. However, he does eat anything he sees whilst out on our walk.

I have tried him with a couple of spoonfuls of natural probiotic yogurt & it does seem to have settled his tummy a bit.

Funny, I have been having problems with my mini recently too.

He was on id diet from the vet to start with and then that in the mornings and freeflow tripe from P@H in the evenings for almost a week.

Tripe has enzymes in it that help a poorly tummy.

He has always been a fussy eater and tripe is the first thing that has ever made him excited about food and he goes back to lick the bowl clean!

Google Schnauzer Forum UK if you want some help from other Schnauzer owners.

But do take care, they can be prone to pancreatitis :(

  • many thanks for the replies and advice.

    Just an update for you.

He's much better now, nearly back to normal. One of our major worries was that he has Canine epilepsy so we weren't sure if the pills we have to give hime twice a day were working or staying down even!

We starved him for 48 hours but i don't think that worried him too much. Then we started feeding him small amounts of boiled chicken with rice or bolied fish with rice 3 or 4 times a day also fed him some of the Canikur paste twice a day which he hated!

The sickness and diaorreah has stopped now (on tue actually) but his poo is still a bit unusual. Little and often which may be because the feeding pattern has changed. Also he's still a bit weak and lethargic. Going to try him with some of his usual tinned food tonight and see how that goes.

I'm sure it's been said already...but a 24hr fast and then boiled chicken and rice or tuna and rice for a few days. You can put some scrambled egg into that. When his tum is cleared up, put a spoon of natural yogurt on his food to reintroduce the natural bacteria to his tum.

He's probably dehydrated and maybe low blood sugar, you might keep him on wet food and give him something tasty to drink like salt free chicken stock.
