Moving a staircase

Hi,

I would like to move my staircase back about a meter to give me a bigger bathroom upstairs. Has anyone done this? What kind of costs would be involved? £5k? £10k?

The house is a either a 30's semi or a 50's semi (there seems to be a bit of a dispute as to when it was built) and at the top of the stairs is the world's tiniest toilet which one can barely sit on and have the door shut at the same time!! So I want to move the loo to be in the already cramped bathroom, which currently only has space or a half sized bath. I would also then like to install a little cloakroom at the bottom of the stairs.

How long would it take to complete the work? a couple of weeks? A month?

I just want a rough idea what kind of things I would need to take into consideration before I start seriously considering it.

Thanks in advance!

Well we moved our stairs round but DH is pretty handy so he did it himself and he used the existing staircase just remodelled it.

It depends on a number of factors how much it will cost best bet is to get a couple of builders in for quotes.

Thanks Nearlyrich. I don't have any spare cash at the moment so it will be a little while before I can afford it so I don't want to waste anyone's time by getting them to come in before I am vaguely in the ball park in terms of cash.
