OK, feel free to ignore me then if you feel I'm talking nonsense;)
I've obviously imagined all the back and forths trying to clarify what someone meant when the wrong term was used (comparable/qualifying being the most often confused)
I think it was good.. Im just not sure why 1 product will glitch and 1 will not.0 -

Hi
Today i bought 1 pot of rice and 8 packs of alpen bar.
SA rang 9 alpen through and i expected that to mess up apg, however they all compared at 32p. the rice compared at 48p. Only other items i bought were fillers. All together I had 10 glitchy items on receipt so dont understand how they compared them. Can anyone make sense of this. JJ, do you have a recipe for your preserves I could follow please? I have a giant blackberry bush at the bottom of the garden with some late bloomers
I'm a complete jam/preserve virgin but I've wanted to give it a whirl for a while. Thank you muchly
Hiya,
I don't have a recipe at all, just an easy method that works for me:
First things first, put a saucer or plate in the fridge, you will need it for testing the set of the jam later.....
1)Put fruit of choice in a pan (preferably foraged or whoopsied)
2)BARELY cover with water and stew til soft.
3)At this point you have to decide whether you want a jelly or jam.
If you want a jelly, you strain the fruit in a tea towel inside a colander over a pan overnight. You just use the juice .
(If you wanna be uber frugal, rescue the flesh for whamming into a blender with juice/yoghurt for a smoothie or add to a fruit pie filling)
If you want a jam, don't bother straining.
4)Then measure either juice for jelly or fruit and juice for jam.
5)For each pint you need a pound of sugar and a good glug of lemon juice (I use nearly half a bottle).
(If you have fresh lemons, all the better. Use the zest and juice.)
6)Boil rapidly until you reach setting point. Keep an eye on it and stir regularly.
(Skim off the 'scum' that rises to the top at this stage and dispose of it.)
7)Setting point is reached when you put a drop on the cold saucer and it forms a skin after a wee while (it will wrinkle when you push it with your nail).
8)Then put into hot sterile jars quickly and lid them. Leave undisturbed as they cool. They should form a vacuum as they cool and self seal.
I've now started using a water bath but this is not necessary for a beginner, especially if you are intending to gift or consume them within a few months.
Let us know how you go on:A Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!:A
