Unwrapped Vanguard ETFs and Index Funds - Best Platform?

  • For Vanguard index funds in an ISA:

Alliance Trust beats Hargreaves Lansdown on cost if you want Vanguard, hold more than two funds, and make eight or fewer regular purchases a year (@ £1.50 per purchase). Otherwise look at Bestinvest.

    Sippdeal more expensive still.

HL wins if you buy one or two Vanguard funds (e.g. LifeStrategy fund of funds).
  • HL don't seem to have the full range of vanguard funds. i can find the UK domiciled funds, but not the ireland domiciled funds.

(they do have the ireland domiciled ETFs.)

Thanks. Although for the purposes of this thread we're talking about lump sum unwrapped investments. Having said that, Alliance Trust does seem to be the winner over time given the monthly holding fees for holding several trackers from HL. Best Invest wins initially because fund purchases are free, but its greater holding fees lose out to ATS after a few years. This ignores regular purchasing completely.

Are you The Accumulator from Monevator? If so, thanks for your article here and all your other good work:

I admit to being one of the aforementioned ditherers!
  • Hi TCA, oops, sorry, that's the perils of skim-reading when you're meant to be writing a blog post. Yes, I am that Accumulator. Glad the articles have helped. Don't blame you for a bit of dithering. It's a big step. I couldn't stop researching and eventually had to come to the conclusion that it was a way of prevaricating. I felt better for taking the plunge.

Confused. TCA, what do you mean by unwrapped investments? Not in an ISA/SIPP?

Yes James. As in not held within a tax efficient wrapper. Bog standard (taxable) investment account.

I see that Cofunds are now getting Vanguard trackers but don't yet see them offered via TD Direct. I feel another email coming on.

    Reply in from TD Direct:

"We are currently in negotiations with Cofunds to offer Vanguard funds through TD Direct Investing. These will be only their GB funds, I cannot confirm at present details of what charges may or may not apply. We expect to be able to offer Vanguard funds by the end of the year but a launch date has not been stated yet."
