Mossy roof

My house has a really mossy roof on one side, curiously it's not a north facing roof more easterly but there is a field and some trees on that side of the house, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Is it OK to go up on a ladder and scrape it off or should I just leave it alone. I have looked at the other roof along my road and they are all the same and no one else seems to bother but I think it looks awful.
Nothing to see here, move along.

I had a similar issue and also hated it and cleaned it off.

To keep it away I strung a copper wire across the apex of the roof, this leaches copper with rain very very slowly and kills off any moss that tries to key into the tiles. I now have a similar problem on a flat roof (slight incline actually) on my extension and will use a similar means of getting rid of the stuff.

    ^^^ good idea

does the copper wire in itself cause any discolouration?
  • erm I'm not that brave I don't mind going up a ladder but I'm not scaling the roof.

While out at work today I saw a guy clearing the moss off his roof using a pressure washer, he had erected a scaffolding tower and was giving it good style, the moss was flying in all directions.

That's a great way to make the problem worse. Every tiny fragment of moss is capable of settling and growing if it lands somewhere suitable.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

Roof cleaning measures such as power washing or brushing techniques can remove or roughen the surface of the roofing material, reducing the intended productive life of the roof. At best, messy and dangerous, temporary solutions will probably require repeated application. They also spread the moss spores rather than kill them.

If it`s causing you worry then copper Ridge is the natural solution to roof moss, algae and lichen problem as alanobrien has stated.
