Car Insurance renewal

Hi,
My car insurance was due in July and my quote from my current insurer Budget was too high, so i emailed them the day before the renewal was due to tell them i wasnt renewing as i had found cheaper terms elsewhere.
The policy was renewed so i called them to say that I had emailed telling them not to renew the policy and i had indeed gone to another insurer. I was told that as i was duel insured then i would not have to pay and wouldn't be charged. I asked her to confirm more than once that would not have to pay the cancellation fees as this was their error, to which she said no i don't not have to pay. I was emailed a [FONT="]Statutory Declaration which i completed and returned straight away and sent them a copy of my new insurance schedule to prove I had duel insurance etc.
She did say on the phone that i would received an automatically generated letter requesting the money which I was to ignore as it would take a few days for the system to catch up. I have since received another letter a final warning saying if i don't pay they will add an additional £20 to the sum of £38 outstanding and this will be handed to a debt collection agency. So following the advice from one of their advisers I am landing into hot water.
As you can imagine I am quite annoyed by this, and i am wondering where I would stand with this? You get the warning calls maybe recorded etc so should I ask them if it was recorded and if there are any notes on my file explaining what happened and the course of action the lady had suggested?
Thank you in advance.

You put in a complaint to the insurer saying what you have here.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

This doesn't necessarily mean that they will be able to find the recording, but it would be a good starting point.
Though I see no reason for them not to believe you, when you emailed in to cancel anyway.0 -
That's great, thank you for your replies guys.
I have drafted a letter...
I would like to dispute this demand for a payment of an outstanding balance.
I called your company on 23/07/2012 to explain that I had indeed sent an email on 20/07/2012 stating the non-renewal of my car insurance due to being insured cheaper elsewhere. I spoke to a lady who confirmed that if I could prove that I was dual insured then I would not have to pay you any money, which I did. I was emailed a Statutory Declaration which I returned straight away and I believe I returned the paperwork too when it was delivered to my home address. I asked this lady more than once about cancellations fees etc and was told each time that I would not have to pay you anything as I was duel insured. She did say I would receive an automatically generated letter requesting money but I was to ignore this, as this would be the system procedure.
So I acted upon the advice given by one of your advisers and ignored the first letter but now another letter has arrived. If you could check if the phone call was recorded or notes taken about the conversation I had with your company as I obviously do not want a debt collection agency turning up at my door due to being told incorrect instructions from one of your advisers.
I hope we can resolve this matter without having to go down the complaints route; I look forward to your reply within the next 7 days and if I do not hear from you I shall consider this case is closed.0 -
Sounds good to me.
Chances are it's just a mistake that they will correct on receiveing your letter.0
