Vendor insists on storing credit card details?

I have used a popular UK based Internet domain name registra for many years. In the last year (or so) they have started to insist that they store my credit card details when I pay online to renew my domain name(s) and that they use then use those details to automatically renew the registration of my domain names each year.
I do not want to have my domain names automatically renewed on an annual basis - prefering to make a decision at renewal time on which to renew and how long for (it may be for more than 1 year and sometimes this make sense as it costs less per year).
More importantly however I do not want my credit card details to be stored by the registra. [I have been the victim of credit card fraud on three different occaisions and each time I was told it was because a vendor somewhere had not securely stored my card details]. I no longer trust any vendor to store these details and whilst I may make one off payments with my card online I do not ever want the details stored.
I can phone the registra (after each and every online payment - there may be several each year as I have half a dozen domains...) and ask them to remove again the credit card details they have stored but that seems to be my only option.
The registra basically says that it's in their terms and conditions now so that's that. I can't beleive that this behaviour is legal - is it?

Of cause it is legal
They have a set of terms and conditions, if you dont like them then chose a different registrar that has a set of T&Cs that you do like0 -
Registrar not registra
But yes, they can have this in their T&Cs. However they must then comply with strict rules regarding safe storage of such data. (Can't remember the specifics, but there is some legislation covering this).0 -
There's no real difference between a one off payment online and storing your card details online. In both instances the company stores your card details. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Except that for a one-off the details are stored transiently and then deleted once the payment has processed?0
