Phone with call screening.

Hi, I am looking for a cordless telephone for the house with call screening. I need to be able to listen to callers before picking up due to anxiety problems.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Almost any DECT system with built-in answering machine will allow that function (although the screening is usually done via the base station's loudspeaker, not the handsets').
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Probably going to sound thick, but what is a DECT system?

Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephone (the standard cordless phones now used in this country).

Almost every modern cordless phone is DECT - it's just the current standard in cordless telephone technology.
As Heinz says though, most modern cordless phones with an answering machine will do what you ask.
We have a Panasonic TG8522EB, purchased over a year ago. It's a twin set, with a seperate charger base for each handset. They work all over the house and in the garden. You can control how quickly the answering machine kicks in. Didn't think we'd really benefit from having two handsets, but it's surprising how there has become a place for "mine" and a place for the OH's! You can even transfer calls between handsets if you really want!
Has lots of other features and is especially useful with caller ID.

I have just had to replace my home phone and bought this one from amazon, and just happens to have call screening.

Phone is good so far too (only had it two weeks), but other reviews are say it is very good too.

I bought these last week. Call screening can be set via base or handset. Quite impressed so far, first battery charge has lasted a week on both handsets.

Check out the Gigaset phones because they are about the best in their class IMO. My S810H can have the ringer enabled only during certain hours so you don't get woken at night but personalized VIP ringtones can ring which can be useful if you only allow certain calls late at night. Lots of ringtones and a ringtone can be set to gradually rise in volume or there can be only one beep in place of a ringtone which is okay if your right by the phone and don't need loud rings. Anonymous callers can have no ring and Alarm calls to wake you up or remind you. SMS text sending and receiving and when used with the N300A IP base station it can do VOIP, email checking, eBay, twitter and news and weather amongst other things. When making a VOIP call, the regular phone line can receive and record a message from an incoming call. It's like having two or more with additional handsets, phone lines. :D
There is also a mute button so you can cuss at them or tell them they are complete plonkers without them hearing lol You know it blows off steam without offending anyone important.

Please note that the S810H won't be any use to you unless you have a base station, it cannot even connect to a phone line and by itself it has no answerphone. I use the N300A IP as my base station and that provides an answerphone and connects to my internet router and to the phone line.
