Spanish bank account although live in UK

My Solicitor (in Spain) needs to open a Spanish bank account for me and has suggested Banco Popular. However as I live in the UK I am wondering whether Santander might be a better choice? Or any other suggestions? I will require something I can bank online with from the UK.
TIA.

I opened an account with Barclays Spain from the UK. I had to fill in an application, submit it with proofs of ID etc to a Barclays branch in the UK, then they opened the Spanish account. This was a few years ago though - don't know if things have changed.

Do you speak good Spanish? If not, your choice is going to be more limited, although some Spanish banks have English-speaking staff in the branches in locations popular with British immigrants.

I have a Hailfax espana account in Spain, opened fully in UK before I left to live here in Sunny Spain. has full online access(in English) and all staff speak(or are) English.

A friend of mine did the same as Benjus to pay the bills for his Spanish property.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Are you happy with the Halifax account? I would have considered Barclays but I am in the process of taking my business elsewhere from them!
  • Does anyone have an account with Santander in Spain? Do you know if you can manage it from a UK branch?

I bank with Banco Popular from the UK (my branch is near Malaga) and am very happy with them. Their online banking facilities are also very good.
