if your laptop came with 'Easy CD & DVD Creator 6' i guess you probably do have a cd recorder...quite possibly a dvd recorder as well0

in win media go to
tools->options click on devices tab there should be a drive in there that represents ur cd drive d:?e:? one of them click properties then click on the recording tab and make sure the box is ticked that says enable cd recording to this...

Thanks Neil, I really appreciate your reply.
I went into devices and clicked on DVD/CD-RW Drive (D: ) but there's no record tab, just audio.
There must be a really simple explanation but it looks like I have no CD burner
