Wrong Chq Guarantee No !?!?!?!?

Hi

I have just been to purchase a new walking jacket for £99 & paid for it by cheque. The sales lady noted my £100 cheque guarantee number of the reverse of the cheque, but I noted that she had written it wrong - had put a 1 instead of a 7 in the number.

Very naughty I know not to point it out :o , but my question is will the bank honour the cheque ? I am currently overdrawn with an 'unauthorised' overdraft & reclaiming £1700+ bank charges from them.

In theory they shouldn't, should they, as the cheque number is wrong? I am hoping that they will bounce the cheque & only charge me for that, of which I will them reclaim :p . Worst case scenario is that it goes through anyway!!!

If they bounce it, will the company I purchased the jacket from be able to trace me through the Bank? - what will happen?

Thanks.
*Helen*

The cheque guarantee number only comes into play if the cheque is bounced. The cheque guarantee card shows the maximum amount your bank will pay out in the event of someone cancelling a cheque.

  • Sorry to be a reall old bag - but out of interest why are you buying a £99 jacket? I know we need treats and I am not being horrid, but buying something and hoping it will bounce for the bank charges that you can reclaim is not right.

Please dont get me wrong but I am really shocked

Does that mean then that if my bank bounce the cheque (& I think they would), then because the No. is wrong, they can't honour it, so therefore I will just get a charge?

Am a tad confused (but then that's not difficult (lol)) :D

It's ok, & it's a rather long drawn-out story, but it's the Bank's fault I am OD. Won't bore you with the details .....

My purchase will not add to the OD, as have money going in tomorrow, but only able to go into town for jacket today :o

Was only asking Q regarding the cheque, as would be nice possibly to get something for nothing!!! Who wouldn't want that ?!?!?!?!

Did the shop swipe your card as well?
In which case they'll have a record of your card number to boot anyway!

And I'm also confused on this point.
If your cheque bounces and isnt paid, you're hoping that you'll only get a charge for a bounced cheque as opposed to another charge for going futher into your unauthorised overdraft and having to pay for the jacket.

So essentially for one more bank charge for bounced cheque you're hoping to get the £99 jacket?
Wealth is not measured by currency
  • the cheque could be bounced if it causes or increases your unauthorised overdraft - the T & C you signed & agreed to included the part that cheques were only to be written against funds already in your account, you are in breach if issuing cqs when no funds available - they could demand your chq book & card back, or thay will just cancel them - but if you conduct your account like this, if they do settle your claim they may close your account anyway.

to purposely write chqs hoping that they'll bounce so you can reclaim more when you're blatantly abusing the system is a smack in the face to people who are up against it financially thru extenuating circumstances that they had no control over

the shop that sold you the jacket would write a letter to you care of the bank who would readdress it to you - whether you choose to go back to the shop to pay for your goods would be up to you - if you don't the shop then could go to the police who would then get involved in a case of fraud as you would have gained the jacket by deception
  • Please dont flame me - but how is it your banks fault that you have charges? Yes they are unlawful, and we have a godsend to claim them back but at the end of the day, we have incurred them and should face some penalty.

I am debt free but have been sorting my OH's over the last three months and the most I have spent on me is £5. It makes me angry I go without to sort these out but I did vow for better or for worse.

Sorry to sound angry,, but did you need the jacket, could you not have got it somewhere else?

    BTW - I am a real !!!!!cat

Have to agree with Virgin Money saver here -
