1 day Barclaycard account on CRA

Hi all

I applied for a Barclaycard Initial at the end of August. Initially accepted and I received the card. Called Barclaycard a week later having not received my pin only to be told that my application had been declined in the second stage or their two stage process. Disappointed that they couldn't communicate that too me!

I have just check Equifax and Experian and both have Barclaycard accounts on them, showing as settled, created on the 29/08/12 and closed on 30/08/2012. Is this right? Should they have created these accounts if my application was declined?

Under your agreement, yes they should. However, morally they cancelled the deal and you are not a customer, so their data is damaging in that it shows you had an accoint terminated for an unspecified reason. Whilst it is not an adverse mark, it is one that really could be argued as invalid.

It's there because thir IT system flags it automatically as such, but you'll need to speak to someone to have it manually removed, and kudos to you for checking!

I'd recommend writing instead, and start your letter with the words "Formal Complaint".

The FOS, and the ICO, really do need to come down hard on Barclaycard, as this seems to be an all too often occurence with them.
  • Agree. This problem with BC has been going on for ages.

Personally I think the account should never have been recorded if the OP was never given the ability to use it. Without access to the credit facility, the account was never really open except as a few bytes on a computer.

Having said that, I doubt whether record will have have negative impact on the OP. (The search might, but that's a different issue.)

Arguably, the account shouldn't be set up with the CRAs until the 14 day 'cancellation' period has elapsed.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

I was thinking of writing to BC anyway as I don't think its great service to not inform me that my application had been declined. Will certainly be mentioning the creating of an account on the CRAs that I've not really had!

    Thanks again

Can't imagine this will have much of an effect on credit scoring to be honest - account closures never state a reason anyway. But you can ask us to query it for you if you want it removing - you would appear to have a very good case.
