Sorry if this seems a basic question ... For the first time I thought I'd try to grow Garlic (heard on GQT that it's best to plant it in the Autumn). So - in order to do this as cheaply as possible, I wonder - do I really need to buy garlic bulbs from seed companies or can I try to use cloves from bulbs on sale in food…

I have successfully grown garlic from bulbs bought in supermarkets and garden centres. On balance I now favour buying in the more expensive bulbs initially, and if you get a good crop put aside 3 or 4 of the best bulbs and use them for planting for next year. I haven't had to buy in bulbs for the past 3 years and the quality of the crop has not declined.
