my friend was telling me that independent or low income students (i.e. gets the full maintenance grant) get money towards supporting themselves through the summer- is this true?

Nope. At least I've never heard of that before, I'd be very surprised if it was true. It will depend on your LEA though so you might want to get in touch with them.0

As far as I know, it's not true. As an independent student I get a small grant (about £300 per term) but that's it, nothing specifically to cover the holidays. You're supposed to budget so that your grant/loan etc cover all year, and top it up with work0

As a student on a full grant I get a £900 grant at the end of April. Which I think will cover me over the summer as we break up the first week of June (college is used for exhibitions). I also get the £700 loan at the same time.
Maybe this is what they meant? Like Gingernutmeg said we dont get dedicated money for it, but they give us enough to manage over it if you budet etc.Green and White Barmy Army!0 -

Sounds like your friend is talking to the Access to Learning Fund, however this is only really available if you are unable to work for certain reasons.Gone ... or have I?0

It used to be true, however, as pointed out above this has been taken over by the Access to Learning fund, and is now only given out if you are both poor as hell and unable to get paid work (for one of a set list of given reasons).April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200
