Two Electricity Lines - One home

Hello folk

I am new here and need some advice.

I am about to buy a new home. Part of the property (one big room) is used as a business which has a separate electricity line. The rest of the house as another electricity line. So two different bills. One business and the other residential.

Now the question is... does anyone have any idea what it would cost to disconnect the business line and reconnect it to the residential line for the home - so I get one residential bill ?

Thanks in advance.

Each DNO will charge different amounts depending on the complexity , distance etc

That's assuming you're not going to be doing anything that will consume a large amount (amperage) of electricity in the room so it could all go to a one phase supply.

    Who is your DNO?

    Hello Kris

    thanks for replying.

I'm in the North West. Blackburn... so not sure who the DNO is (I assume this is different to the electricity supplier like Scottish Power etc).

The room will be just converted into a living room.. with the normal electricity devices.. such TV, laptop, games console.. and lighting. Nothing major.

PS By the way, the room is part of the home.. it's just another room that had been converted for business use with a separate electricity supply...that will be re-converted back to residential use.

Apologies, I misread your initial post, you do indeed state that you just want the original business supply disconnected and the home one extended.

In which case, it should be easy to get the supplier to terminate the business line, have you had an electrician quote you for connecting this room to the consumer unit of your home supply?

He'd probably just install a sub-distribution board somewhere and run this from an appropriately cabled feed from the main consumer unit/meter tails.
  • Oh right.. so this can be done by an electrician ? That would be great... I was under the impression only the electricity supplier could do this.

If this can be done by electrician then I'll get quotes..... any rough idea what it might cost ?

Only the electricity supplier can terminate the business supply (up the cut-out and meter), anything after that is not their responsibility and an electrician can sort it out.

Sorry, I couldn't really give a figure, best to get a quote from 3 electricians pointing out the two supplies asking how much to feed off the home supply. I normally then bin the highest and lowest quote and go for the one in the middle unless I know one of the quotes has done excellent work and is recommended.
  • Thank you very much for your help and advice Kris. Appreciated.

Yeah, you just rewire it on your side.

Once complete, you ask the supplier for the supply you want to go, to disconnect it. This would normally be a Logical Disconnection which means that whilst the supplier will arrange for the meter to be removed, the supply itself is left there and the distributor terminates the MPAN.

This is an unusual scenario though that would not normally be seen in the Logical Disconnection process which would mainly cater for removal of off peak supplies or conversion from 3-4 multi rate metering back to standard types. So, I would advise you discuss with the distributor first so you know what to expect because if they want to go the Physical Disconnection route, its a longer process where the meter is removed, MPAN terminated and distributors equipment removed and whilst the supplier will remove the meter, they can only request the distributor contacts you...its between you and them from there.

Sometimes in a scenario like this, the distributor may cancel both in favour of a new MPAN.

See this link to find your distributor.
