Painting Metal Frame Chairs

I bought some beautiful modern style, foldable chairs from the boot sale on Sunday. They are slightly rusty on the metal frame part, some worse in parts than others. However, I have managed to clean them as best I can with some Astonish, which has lessened the rusty areas, however now I want to try and paint them to improve.
I bought a small pot of enamel paint but it just doesn't seen to be 'fixing' in that when I rub my hand over them, I'm getting a silver residue on my hands.
I would rather paint them than spray them, so can anyone suggest what paint is best to use???

Hi lil_p, Hammerite is the thing you need, it is designed to go straight onto rusty surfaces. You can get either a smooth finish or a metalic finish. It comes in various colours. The smallest tin is about £3.99 at B&Q enough to do about 6 garden chairs. I am a P&D and today had to some metal framed garden chairs, well past their sell by date, but after 1 coat they look great0

Thanks for that.
Fortunately, in true MS style I mentioned to my Mum about my enamel paint disaster and after looking in her shed, she provided me with a 3/4 full tin of silver Hammerite paint so it hasn't cost me anything extra.
Have spent the evening painting the chairs and they look fantastic. I'm really glad I got them now ...just need a nice table and we might just be able to enjoy sitting in our garden this year!!!
Cheers!0
