Meter clock out by an hour

Am on economy 10 with Scottish power, Last month when i gave a meter reading over the phone, i noticed that the clock was an hour out. The one that is on the meter & cannot be adjusted by us! I phoned Scottish Hydro and an engineer was sent out to fix. I have since been given £65.98 refund/discount on my bill. We are all electric in our home, heating cooking etc. I pay £200 per month by direct debit & was in arrears. I thought due to the long winter & cold spring /summer. I have no idea whether this refund offers good value or should i ask for more? can anyone offer advice? As my wife gets up at 5.30am i usually have heating on from 4.40am which is cheap rate start time. Meter would think that was 3.40am so lost 1 hour at cheap rate every morning?

  • Normally the meter clock is never changed throughout the year, so when the clocks change in October and go back an hour the clock will be correct until March.

Did the engineer say it was faulty and change it? If so, no one is going to know when this occurred so you need a breakdown of what period that refused covers. Its going to be a dispute though as no one can prove when this happened so raise complaints and push for whatever you can or your supplier might be offering you the bare minimum right now.

If it wasn't faulty, it could just be that the meter didn't alter with BST. Older versions don't.

OP, if you have the type of meter that Terry describes and the engineer who visited corrected the time then come the end of October it will be 1 hour out again.

It should be set to GMT all the year round. If he's moved it to BST, then the problem will reoccur. I don't have a clock, but a Scottish Power TeleSwitch. This uses data signals in the Radio 4 frequency to auto- correct itself, so my switch to off-Peak always takes place at midnight all the year round.

Meter settings are configured based on a GMT or BST indicator, but this is at industry level when a pattern is first introduced.

There are some regions where the radio teleswitch meters that receive a nightly signal from the distributor via BBC operated by Archiva, will be adjusted with BST so they are always matching our clocks. This isn't a standard thing, its from the old national days and most regions don't operate this policy.

The engineer would change the meter if its a faulty time switch, he can't change the time without breaking the meter seals which is tampering.

I know some more modern metering switches with BST. I don't know whether many of these are out there and it actually conflicts with the industry agreed settings. I know they use them in business.
