can woodstain be removed?

OK, this is a 5 year old problem which I've been having niggles about recently.
We bought a white OAK door, which was amazing looking, we wanted to keep it as is. Oldest brother told younger brother to apply some sort of varnish in order to protect it. Younger brother buys some woodstain and paints over these expensive door with horrible mahogany door.
Question.. is it possible to somehow absorb the stain out? or is it too far good. I know that woodstain loses affect over the years, but does that mean that the stain that's absorbed inside the wood will fade as well or is it just surface level stain that goes away?

I don't know how difficult this is to do but I would imagine you'd have to be super careful about it...take a look here..
