Well done Fonz - exactly the right sort of attitude to take with your debt.

When I was struggling I took on two extra jobs; the first was delivering pizzas on weekend evenings - not brilliant but did help a bit. The second was as a Community Service Supervisor on a Sunday - much more rewarding all round - in fact ended up carrying on for over 5 years even after I had cleared my debts.

Yes I took on a second job about 4 years ago and I still do it now, it's only 4 hours a week but nets me about £110 a month after tax at high rate as mentioned before. So every little helps, I often find this keeps me afloat every month. Couldn't afford to not do it really!

I'm looking for some part time work - ideally something I could do from home (but don't we all want that!) I do some surveys etc, but it's only pin money really

  • have you thought about doing an evening shift in a supermarket that way (i think) you'll get discount on your shopping as well so effectively saving even more money

good luck with what ever you decide to do to help you clear your debts

I do 2 nights a week at a supermarket doing shelf stacking. Its easy work, not too physical and easy on the brain. Pay is not too bad, work until 12.30am and you get paid extra after 10pm, discount on shopping and there is usually an annual bonus which was very good this year although I hadnt been there long enough to get a great amount this time round.

Was hesitant about taking the job but has proven a good decision.

I have previously worked in a pub, a nightclub, and then more recently (and which helped me pay off most of my debt), working p/t at a healthclub on reception. This meant I could finish my f/t job, go there and work for 4 hours of an evening, and then I would do a Sat and/or Sun too. At one point I was working around 20 hours there, so it was pretty tough for a while, but made such a difference to my debt repayments!! It was a fun atmosphere to work in, good pay, good colleagues, discounts, (unfortunately not a gym membership because I was only part time, but you could occasionaally use the facilities), and an occasional celebrity spotting. I used to earn around 300 extra a month.

Then in the last 6 months before I came travelling I worked on a Sat in an estate agents, answering phones, filing, doing a few viewings, very basic stuff, but always busy, so never bored - but excellent money, it really helped!! Meaning I could save more money for my travel fund...

I can appreciate that some people cant have a 2nd job, but there are some people out there who are so darn lazy & dont appreciate that you do have to put in some effort to get out of debt. Personally, I would rather spend my spare time working & earning money, helping myself get out of debt, rather than spending my time not being able to do anything because I have no money. Well, it worked anyway.

The tax on an additional income is a pain, but a fact of life, and the extra money coming in, really does help & makes a difference, for sometimes, not an awful lot of work.

    xx

I have done merchandising in supermarkets, found that job in jobcentre plus. Basically things like greetings cards, mobiles, schwartz, cds and dvds are all done by outside people not tescos etc. You can generally do your owns hours and it's easy on the brain. Now i just do mystery shopping - love the pub ones!!

I work for a party plan company so the earnings are unlimited. I work a couple of nights a week and usually come away with on average about a hundred pound but it could be more or less depending on the sales at the party. Most I have earnt from one party for two hours was 140.00

    Hi All,

I'm thinking of taking some extra work in the evenings to accelerate the repayments of my debts and wondered if anyone else had taken similar steps and how this has worked out?

I'm 23 and my girlfriend is 24, we've both got good jobs (approx £60k between us) but a big mortgage (250k), loans of about £11,000 and credit cards to the tune of about £7,000.

Now the plus side is we do manage to end up with a few hundred pounds spare each month but obviously this has to go straight on the credit cards so things could be a lot worse but I'm thinking of getting some extra work in the evenings to push it on a bit.

What sort of evening work have people picked up to accelerate their debt free goals? I've considered driving for one of the supermarket home delivery chains or bar work but I'd be keen to hear others experiences :)

Not extra so much as moving to a position in my company that offers out of hours and overtime... Its damn hard work, im exhausted this morning because i worked 8am until 11pm yesterday, but its only 2 days a week and im clearing an extra £300 a month because of it.

Because its so hard earned and i dont want to be doing this forever you can be damn sure it doesnt get frittered either!
