Who has taken an extra job?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of taking some extra work in the evenings to accelerate the repayments of my debts and wondered if anyone else had taken similar steps and how this has worked out?

I'm 23 and my girlfriend is 24, we've both got good jobs (approx £60k between us) but a big mortgage (250k), loans of about £11,000 and credit cards to the tune of about £7,000.

Now the plus side is we do manage to end up with a few hundred pounds spare each month but obviously this has to go straight on the credit cards so things could be a lot worse but I'm thinking of getting some extra work in the evenings to push it on a bit.

What sort of evening work have people picked up to accelerate their debt free goals? I've considered driving for one of the supermarket home delivery chains or bar work but I'd be keen to hear others experiences :)

    Hi there :)

I have done over time at work, flogged stuff on Ebay and Amazon, delivered leaflets and cleaned a gym at 5.30am in a morning before going to my "full time" job. I hated all that slog at the time but it was worth it to be debt free and become a saver rather than a spender.
However I always promised myself I would have one day a week off from any form of work and I did.
Saturday was and still is my chill day.

    Good luck X X
  • Hi Fonz

I am in my second week of my part time job, I have been lucky and went into my local garage to see if there was any work. Got a phone call the next day saying they were looking for somebody to clean the pumps and keep the forecourt clean. I can do my own hours (approx 9 a week) whenever I wont, two garages involved for same owner, tend to do a big clean on Sunday night (4hrs) and then do Monday night at one garage, Tuesday before work at the other and so on until Wednesday, then I dont come into Sunday as agreed with the garage owner.Pick up roughly extra £180 a month but the good thing is I can do it when I want so it wont interfere with my family life, just means getting up a bit early for a couple of mornings.

I also got offered a job at tesco working the Friday night shift, not really what I wanted to do but I would have done it if nothing else came up, I turned that down in the end. Was thinking of doing both jobs but realised I would kill myself on top of my day job!

    hsbc - 2000 - now 0 (12.9%) :T
    Halifax - 3500 now o(0%) :T
    Barclays - 1500 - now 0 (5.5%) :T

I work in a bar part time and it can be really hard work sometimes for what feels like very little money! remember you'll be taxed at basic rate so on minimum wage (which most pubs pay) you'll be taking home roughly 3.90 an hour (i believe, please correct me if im wrong!). i work an extra 15-20 hours a week on top of 35 in my full time job. this gives me roughly an extra £70-£90 a week.
i find it useful in that not only does it make me more money but it also stops me spending on the nights that i'm at work.

Not me but my daughter who is about your age contacted an agency and worked her holidays!!!! She did some child care and some admin.

she also babysits - useful coz she takes her bf and they usually get fed as well as earning about £5.50 per hour. she puts cards in newsagents windows.

    Good luck.

Not in the same vein but I'm looking for a PT job after finding this site so I can become DF sooner. I am a single Mum with a DD who is 19 months old. This site has motivated me to find a job and clear those debts sooner!

If you're young I would really recommend bar work. I did it when I was a bit younger and no daughter, and although it might not be the highest paid job the social side made up for it - you get to earn a bit of money and have a laugh at the same time.

Have you thought about ebaying, amazoning etc.

And don;t forget to check your contract at work. Some companies have clauses saying no second jobs, my partner's old job had that clause in.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Current Pay Off Target : £1500
  • I work in a hotel bar in the evening, I don't earn a great amount but it's fun, stops me spending and they give me dinner!
