Front Door Security

Hi
We have a pvcu/upvc (not sure what the difference is - the cheap double glazing type option!) type front door and only have a 5 lever mortice lock, which if we don't use a key to lock as we enter/leave the house means that it stays unlocked.
I was after getting a rimlock (extra key which aotmatically locks the door) but went to a local diy store who said that the ones they had woudn't be suitable since they were for wooden doors. He also took an exasperated "gasp" when i said i thought it was a pvcu/upvc door and said thats a big job and wont come cheap as i would have to call out a specialist.
Anyone have any advice? Went to the local copshop and they gave us some info but not mentioning types of locks suited to types of door.
Thanks

Don't know where you're based but here in Hampshire there is an excellent locksmiths (CSS Total Security) and I've used them for many years. I just contacted them and they fitted a higher spec lock to the existing door.
You might try contacting a decent local locksmiths and asking them what they can do.Trying hard to be a good moneysaver.0 -
Assortment of locks is very poor even in good DIY shops.
locksonline.co.uk have a huge assortment with good descriptions and dimensions. If you manage to extract your old lock I think you will be able to find a replacement.0 -

I'd be very surprised if you do find a rim lock to fit.
Fitting it to plastic rebated doors isn't possible to my knowledge.
You say you have a 5 lever mortice lock ?
Does the lock fit right inside the end of the door from the top to the bottom ??
can you get a picture sent over to me and I'll see if something else might be suitable ?If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

big security measure u can all take, is not to leave any keys within 8-10ft minimum of your front door, or even more
far too easy for scrotes to get at them and then help themselves, either to the contents of your house or just your car
take it from me, it gos on far far too often, all they need is a length of cane or fishing rod with either a hook or magnet on the end
you could always do what we do, and dont have a letterbox in the first place, but if you already have one, please be aware0
