Are we being ripped off?

Hi there

Just been reviewing my bills today. I asks for an overview from my gas and electricity supplier and was a bit shocked by how high our gas usage has been.

I live with my partner in a one bedroom flat. We are careful with energy consumption but it seems that throughout the year we're paying £53 per month on average! To me this seems steep but maybe I'm being naive?

We currently pay a £30 fixed amout for gas by direct debit so this means we have an outstanding debt of about £100. I enquired how mic it would cost to cancel and was told it would cost £80!

What do people suggest I do? I'm aware too that the boiler may be contributing to this high cost, but also wonder because of our dodgy landlord whether the flat upstairs are also using our gas too?

Any advice would be most welcome, thanks
M

    Welcome to the forum.

Do you mean £53 a month for gas and Electricity? If so that is actually very good. The UK average is around £1300 a year.

Obviously in a small flat your heating bill will be less than average, but insulation and boiler efficiency play a big part.

This forum is a great resource and thanks for your welcome and reply.

On average we're paying £53pm for gas and electricity is about £18. The highest we were paying for gas (during winter) was about £66 but in August we paid about £18. Is this normal? I am new to being a a utility payer so it's a shock to the system. I know gas prices are rising more and more and thought we were quite careful but maybe this is just the way of things.

If it is, is it worth increasing the amount we're paying in direct debit each month?

    Thanks

    :wave:Welcome

I think you are about average really.

Can you tell how much your gas has cost you over the last 12 months, add a bit and then divide it by 12, then set up your DD for this amount.

    Same with the leccy.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Telling us what you pay per month tells us nothing about your actual consumption. Quote your actual kWh consumption, and proper advice can be given.
Then use any comp site with your annual kWh figures to find the best deal.
What tariff are you currently on?
