Late payment by 1 week on credit card

I have made a late payment on my Barclays Visa credit card for the first time in over 3 years. Its my fault and I hold my hands up!

The payment is a week late - I immediately paid off the outstanding balance when I found out.

The card company has waived the £12 fee, but I am more concerned about a late payment appearing on my credit file. Haven't I read somewhere there is a 30 day period in which to pay the balance before Barclays advise CRA's of a late payment?

Any advice would be welcome.

I imagine Barclaycard would have reported it after a week, a day or two they probably wouldn't have.

Some providers give you until the next statement is produced before reporting to the CRAs, but I've never heard of anyone giving another month!

Direct debits don't forget your payment is due. You should try one (if not for the full payment, you should at least have one for the minimum payment as an insurance policy). ;)

I have a number of cards issued by BC and usually pay them manually. However I also have direct debits set up on each account so if I ever forget I know the direct debit will be claimed for that month.

    Set one up now online.

Thanks - I had a direct debit taking the full amount for 3 years up until July - I cancelled it for one month, its a long story but it was necessary! - it was my fault I didn't reinstate it. It is back up and running now.

I am very confused - on another post on MSE forum I read the following:

Hi normally, from my experiance a late payment is only recorded when it is more than 30 late and therefore it is not just late but now a missed payment as your next bill with also be due by this time, late payments ie within a few weeks of the payment date do not show on your credit file, but the credit card company may charge you a late fee and if you have a 0% deal, they may take you off this and start charging interest, this is what happened to me with Virgin MBNA.

This is the 30 days I was thinking about. There are conflicting views about late/missing payments and how lenders report them, or not, to CRA's

If you do end up with one and its the only one on your file, it'll make naff-all difference to be honest.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
  • I am charged late payment fee for no fault of my on.All i did was change my direct debit to another bank .Called the barclaycard and they informed me that since i changed the bank they did not have enough time to take my minimun payment.I have not cancelled my old bank direct debit .Now my balance transfer offer is gone and charged interest for the amount in the card(BT for 0 percentage until nov 2012) what should i do

1 - Accept that you were (at least partially) to blame for not checking beforehand that the new DD had been set up in time.

2 - Call BC, explain the situation, apologise and ask (nicely) if they would accept that it was a one-off mistake and restore the offer.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • I think you will be ok - the fact they have waived the £12 fee means the will probably not report it either (at least thats what happened to me with MBNA).
