Colitis and food .....

Well - since the original thread seems to have disappeared - though heaven knows why, since I specifically said I didn't want medical advice and that Maisie is under the care of a vet and was only looking for help in finding a food that might help

Anyway, thanks to those who did offer their suggestions :) - I have got some JWB Fish & Rice (hypoallergenic) and ordered some pro-biotics (suggested on another forum).

Fingers crossed it helps as it's horrible seeing her down in the dumps and having an upset tum so often.

Did not read the original thread - sorry.

Friend's dog has been unwell for a week now.

Last week she took the dog to emergency vet, they took bloods, checked the dog over - said nothing to worry about.

Dog still unwell, she has been to her own vet 3 times now, repeated blood tests and Xrayed the dog - nothing trapped inside, blood tests normal - dog still unwell.

Swollen tummy, seems to be in pain.
Friend was told some gas seemes to be trapped but c'mon, it is over a week now.

Dog is on chicken and rice home cooked food, symptoms not going away. Also given gaviscon (vet advice) and probiotics (forum advice)

Friend called 2 vets in Poland now and they advised testing poo for worms. Dog has been wormed but.. She is going to take the dog back to the vets on MOnday.. sigh....

I am wondering is this is colitis...
  • My dog Boris has IBD, with bouts of colitis thrown in. I've been told colitis is a form of IBD??

Anyway, we had him on chicken and rice and he reacted to that so chicken and rice was out. This was about 2yrs ago. I phoned the nutritionists at Burns dog food as that was what he was on at the time. They were tonnes more helpful than the vet.

The vet suggested a hypoallergenic diet when he was already on Burns (all their food is hypoallergenic) and it turns out they just wanted the money for the hills prescription diet!

The burns lady said as he already reacted to chicken and rice, try some boiled spuds and tuna, then gradually reintroduce a dried food. We tried that and it took a while but eventually he was on Burns pork and potato. We switched to Arden grange white fish and potato but found that the ingredients seemed to be different in each bag, so after much nagging by husband we switched to raw food.

And we haven't looked back. We don't do the whole hog raw diet, we cheat and buy the pre packed raw meat from pat purred pets or pets at home and mix in some fish oil and spuds/veg. He's been fine ever since.
JWB fish is quite expensive - id look into burns or Arden grange.
Probiotics wise I buy pro-kolin from an online pet chemist - petmeds I think is the cheapest. Again, about a third cheaper than the vets.

I give my dog natural yogurt every day for his breakfast, might be a cheaper way of getting her to have probiotics.
