Buying a car that seller says they paid for with credit card.
Options
Hi..friend of mines is looking at buying a car privately. He is going to be paying cash for it. In the region of £6000. The seller has said he is downgrading as he needs to clear his credit card debt and buy a cheaper car. He has said he origonally paid for the car on his credit card.
Would this car be safe to purchase...would the credit card company be able to pursue my friend for any outstanding payment the seller has not made or should I say incase he might not make.
The car is otherwise HPI clear on the check.
Thanks in advance.

No the car is not a secured loan and should have nothing to do with the cc company.0

6k is alot to of cash to push out on private sale, is there no other car of simular that can be purchased from a dealer?
private there in no warranty other than if its failed to be as described he could return it, but as this guy has debts there would be no chance of taking him to small claims and getting that cash back, if he has absorbed that cash into debt.0 -
Thanks Colino
I was concerned for them as seller has only owned the car less than 6 months and I have rarely heard of anyone using a credit card for full payment on a car.0 -

Thnks for your input.
Car is at least £1000+ less than buying through a dealership.
I totally agree with you on the risks and am trying to make him aware of these.0 -

I think you would be surprised at how many people buy their cars with credit card these days. Ive done it twice.
Mostly for protection on a section 75 and also you can make quite a bit using a cash back card, specially if you can haggle with the dealer not to impose a cc charge.
Personally, I would never hand over any cash for a private sale. Ive seen too many friends/family do it, the car has been bodged and the problem rears its ugly head a few days later. Try to talk him out of it, or at least get the AA or RAC to look it over.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

then i should excersize caution to your friend and ask him WHY is it a £1000 less than others.
i understand quick sale etc excuses but can also be a desperation of a fault being there and so expensive to fix needs it rid of.
personally i wouldnt go private with this amount of cash its way too risky.
if you friend wants a car of this type then i suggest he find a respecable broker or keep his eyes out on the forecourts.0 -

Thanks ...I agree and he has now seen this thread and has decided to go down the buying from a dealership route for extra peace of mind and immediate warranty.0 -

Almost by definition, unless the private seller is feeling particularly optimistic, an equivalent car from a dealer isn't going to be available for £6000 - as the OP has confirmed.mattyprice4004 wrote: »Bought 3 cars with credit cards, very normal.
Yep. As is buying cars at this sort of price (and more) through a private sale.0
