Just what we don’t need – our bikes have been stolen!

OH has just phoned me to say that our bikes have been stolen from the back garden - mine, OH’s and one of my Dad’s (OMG! I don’t relish telling him) which he had lent to OH before OH bought his and we hadn’t got round to giving him back. DS’s was luckily in the shed – the only one that would fit in there. They’ve been out there for months and months and it never occurred to us that anyone might take them – as they didn’t fit in the shed we just put a tarpaulin over them. Why anyone would want them I don’t know – mine is old, dirty and tatty (it would have had a good clean soon ready to be ridden again, now that weather is getting warmer), my Dad’s one is really old (though apparently a good make). The only one that is worth anything is OH’s because it is only about 2 years old.
This is just what we don’t need. We have no car because we can’t afford one - these were our only mode of transport. I used to go down to Sainsburys late on a Sunday afternoon to get cheap meat for the boys and my bike was great because I had pannier bags and a handlebar bag which were ideal for putting shopping in. We could also go for rides along the canal towpath which is lovely in the summer – this is the way we often travelled to my Dad’s.
I am feeling absolutely gutted – I feel like I could cry.

Sorry to hear that, can you claim on your contents insurance?0

We had my OH bike stolen and claimed on the contents insurance with little hassle. Also make sure to report to the police. The Best Things in Life Are Free0

Have you reported it to the police? This happened to our next door neighbours and the police were really good - did a few house to house enquiries and it turned out to be the horrible kids from over the road who'd nicked them!0

Thanks! Don't know whether we can claim on the contents insurance - will have to fish out my documents when I get home.
OH has phoned the police and reported it. He has been given a crime reference number and they may get back to us again. They will also be contacting our next door neighbour who apparently heard some noise in the early morning (he is a light sleeper) and the thieves attempted to break into his shed first. They are also going to report it in the paper - to try to stop the gits trying to sell them I suppose.
OH has gone out to have a look round to see if they have been dumped anywhere - only his was worth nicking so maybe they decided to dump the other 2.
I've just told my Dad about it and he is O.K. as it was an old bike (he has another newer one) - I thought he was going to go mad! Phew!PigginSkint's debt free diary

I'm surprised they are doing as much as they are, TBH. When some delightful person cut the fuel line on my car they gave us a crime reference number and that was the last we heard!PigginSkint's debt free diary

Trouble is there is little you can do to deter a really determined theif - in our local paper last week someone had their 5 bikes stolen - they were all chained together - no to anything, but someone must have lifted the lot at the same time onto a truck!!!!!!

HI pigginskint
You poor thing. that is so upsetting. I remember how angry I was when my bike was stolen and that was 19 years ago!
But last year my friend had 3 bikes stolen from her garage - they were really fancy expensive ones - and she got money back on her household insurance, enough to replace all 3 with new ones. Hope its the same with you.
Our local freecycle always has bikes on offer too.
Good luck, hope you are not inconvenienced for longTotal debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
Hi, is there anyone who could loan you a bike/s for now, until you can get something sorted, so you dont have to worry about transport?
Hopefully your home insurance will cough up.0
