Red & green vertical lines on TV - is it dead?

I have an old Ferguson CRT TV which, until tonight, has done us proud for a number of years. However it now has red/green vertical lines, equally spaced, all over the screen.:( Is the TV ready for the pearly gates? Is it worth repairing (if there are any TV repairers left out there)? Have I got to fork out for a new telly:( or is there a knack - maybe to give it a good thump in a certain area?!:)

Do you still get a picture, if it were random blotches of colour I'd suspect a failure of the degaussing circuit.
Bin it, get a new TV you know you want to !
That gum you like is coming back in style.

No - not random blotches, just lots of thin vertical lines.

Mmm, even if I wanted to, the purse wouldn't allow it!:D

However, I've just put the telly on - and the lines are gone! Picture's as clear as a bell! I didn't even have to give it a good thump :) - obviously threats and begging works :D (for now!)

I suspect it's lulling me into a false sense of security, and at some point in the not too distant future, it'll give an almighty bang:eek:

    Start saving up...............

Our LCD one went kaput one day, sound but no picture, my son in law said he would take it with him next day and drop it off at a repairers for them to have a look, this would be a 40 mile round trip. He rang later to say the shop wanted £40 before they even took the back off, I told him not to bother and just bring it back. Just to make sure I tried it once more just to be sure before I binned it and yes, you guessed it, both perfect picture and sound. Couldnt believe it but very happy about it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Ah, see, the threat of disposal worked on your TV:D Although yes, I think I'll have to dig the piggy bank out of storage. Well, I've not blown up yet - it's still working........ (tempting fate?!)

If you're looking for a replacement CRT there are plenty about and you can't give them away - take a look on Freecycle or similar. I had a perfectly good working Sony flatscreen 32" superb picture but replaced it with a 42" HDTV. The sony I couldn't give away, tried eBay and everything, paid over £1000 for it originally, a bloke came and took it away for a tenner. :(
