The landlord is someone we know distantly and who talks to alot of people we know so would not like to just stop paying them rent as we live in a small town and the type of person I am I would rather be stuck in this house paying the rent than for people to know that we owed someone money.
You live in a small community of people who talk, but you would get away with a fake split and benefit claims. And you'd be deeply ashamed of owing a person money but find it within your heart to steal from tax payers and risk prosecution.

I suggest speaking to your Council Housing Officer and explaining your predicament. Go in person if you can.
They may be able to pull some strings so that you can delay starting the lease for the council house.''apply within''

If this is your first child you maybe entitled to the Sure Start Maternity grant ( I think )?.....this will help with buying things for the baby.
Is there nothing in your tenancy agreement with LL about Tenants giving 1 months notice and Landlords giving 2 months notice? I know when we were renting privately this was stated on our agreements.
We were in a similar situation 7.5yrs ago we were renting privately and were offered a new build housing association house.....we too had to pay 2 wks rent on HA house if we wanted to accept as well as paying our rent in private let.....it was difficult....but we managed...only my husband was working as I was on long term sick....we borrowed fridge/freezer/cooker etc.,......it was worth it to be able to take the house....our landlord accepted 1mths notice from us.
I wouldn't even contemplate going 'the other route'....its not worth the risk.0 -
if this was me, i wouod be sitting down with my landlord and explaining that you can no longer afford the house your letting due to changes in you personal finances with losing your job, that you have been offered a house by the council at a rate that you could afford, and not wanting him and you to go through battles of cash owing amounting to so much that you both end up in a county court, you wish for him to release your from your tenancy, so he can find someone to get in the property who can pay him and he retains an income from the property, and that any outstanding money you will agree to a repayment plan and stick to it.
he should be happy that your thinking of him and also that you understand you can live there as it is costing too much.
i cant see him keeping you on his books if he isnt going to generate a income from you.
carpets etc can come later, there probably a small carpet buisiness near you who sell remnants cheap as chips and will throw in carpet grips do free measuements, and will discount underlay, there may even be carpet left from the previous tenant that with a good vaxing come up to standard untill you need to change it.
look on FB swap shops for a fridge/freezer/washing machine's dryers
as long as they get you through for a few months while you settle in and get back on your feet you should be OK.
paint, i would wait untill you see the council property, and see if you actually need, to part of these tenancy agreements is that is you leave you have to repaint and put it at a certain standard.0
