Do tell, why would Dionysius be turning in his grave?? WikiP says "Lardner showed himself to be a successful popularizer of science" and he knew a bit about steam engines.
Sure this wasn't steam, but wasn't it successful popularizing either then?
I always thought he was the one behind the myth in the very early days of the railways that human beings wouldn't be able to survive speeds of over 30 mph, etc.
Further to the French attitude to high speed railways, don't forget that the mayor of Lille actually used all his political connections to get the Eurostar to go through and stop at the town. I can't see that happening in the UK!The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
From Brunel University's website article on I K Brunel:
"Brunel himself suggested that the opinions of other engineers should be sought and he was unlucky enough to be saddled with a Dr Dionysius Lardner who displayed a remarkable talent for drawing incorrect conclusions from observed data."
