Doorway - what do I need?

Hope I can explain this clearly.

I have a doorway into an extension. This is leading off the main hallway at the bottom of the stairs.

There is nothing surrounding the door i.e. door frame, architrave etc. However, I am wanting to wallpaper the hallway but leave the room (extension) painted. The problem is, I will be left with a "raw" edge on the wallpaper when it comes up against this doorway.

The door is not a standard width (there are two other doors into this extension so did not have to comply with building regs) so I dont want to put a lining kit in as it will narrow the doorway a little and also the architrave would look "heavy" around the smaller gap.

Any ideas what would work. I was looking at decorative beading but I am not sure it would look right.

Many thanks.

If I'm understanding this right you just need some decorative moulding. Loads of different styles available at the DIY sheds and it is cut to size so your non standard size is fine. Basically its like skirting boards for doors.

Jayne is right. Any decorative moulding set in the centre of the revel around the 'arch' would work. Maybe dado rail?

So how would I fix this to the wall?

Would I use something like "no nails" and how would I guarantee that it sat "flat" on the wall?

I have visions of it not fixing flat and it gaping? I am planning on painting anything I do fix to match the skirting so could I use filler where it never quite sat right? I cant be sure the wall will be true.

    Cheers.
  • erm, no nails Might work depends on a number of things, I be tempted to plug and screw. You'd fill any gaps with filler then decorate.
