Limited Paypal Account help

Back in Feb 2012, Paypal limited my account permanently apparently because I have 2 accounts one of which was trading inappropriately. I have one account which I have had for around 10 years. I challenged them for months, making regular phone calls and emails. They refused to give me any information about why they had done this, and told me they wouldn't discuss it with me any more. Eventually I gave up as my husband has an account and I hadn't used mine much for a while.

Anyway last couple of days my husband needed to refund something he sold that got damaged in transit. The money in the account had already been spent on something else so he was told to add a bank account to transfer money into his account in order to refund the item.

He tried to do this but was told he couldn't because the account was already linked to another account (mine - it's a joint current account). I went into my account to either close it or remove the account from Paypal, but told because the account was limited I couldn't do either.

Can anybody advise how I can either:
find out why my account was limited and get it lifted,
close my account, or
remove the accounts so my husband can use them.

I was going to let it go because it wasn't really causing a problem with anything else, but that has now changed. Is anyone able to help??

  • To be honest, from many stories I have read here and there and from my own historic experience now they have the bank details from your old account linked to your husbands I would expect this to be limited some time soon as well, even though it is a joint account paypal do not care as all they see is the same account number.

For the refund you may be better to email the buyer and explain the problem and then ask them if you can send them a cheque.

NEVER EVER use the same bank account or debit or credit card or email address for 2 different paypal accounts, even if it is all above board like this example it is a no no.

It looks like paypal are having a real clear out of accounts they feel are not quite 'right' for whatever reason. There seems to be threads on many forums all in the past few days.

In this instance though I agree with underpressure and the liked bank account is going to be a major problem. People are only allowed one of each type of paypal account, and by opening another (even in a different name) is not allowed- and they have linked this easily via the bank account

You now have two breaches which is going to make this harder to recover from, the 2nd account has been lost probably for good as using an account while suspended on another is something paypal really don't like. So you need to concentrate on the first account, which I understand from your post is going to be a bit of an uphill struggle.

  • Thanks for responding. I'm not really sure what you mean by first and second account. I've only ever had one Paypal account, have had one for around 10 years. My husband has only ever had one account, which he has had for around 7 years. They have only every been used separately, linking a joint current account to both accounts as far as I'm concerned is not opening a new account in a different name.

Not sure what you mean by two breaches. I haven't breached anything at any time, that is what I have found so frustrating! I have one account and have only ever had one account. My husband has one account and has only ever had one account. I don't use his account for anything, if I want something bought or sold he does it through his paypal and ebay accounts in his name.

We've managed to resolve the refund, but I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on how I get my limited account closed so they no longer have access to my bank account details, as I am no longer able to use the Paypal account. This would also then "free up" the account for my husband to link to his account.

Neither of us has ever done anything against the Paypal T&C's to our knowledge.

I just find Paypal (and ebay to some extent) to be a nightmare to deal with, but as they have effectively cornered the market I really feel like they have us over a barrel to be able to sell things and access good deals on almost anything.

They are linked accounts even if one was in your name and one in the name of your husband as they attempted to both use the same bank account. That is all paypal need to consider the 2nd account (your husbands) to be a risk as well.

You as an entity cannot use paypal if suspended, by trying to link the bank account that you have previously used as 'yours' to another account effectively means you would have been able to attemot to use paypal again. That is how they are looking at this.

Even if you can remove your bank account from your 1st account (the one in your name) you are still going to be flagged as linked as the damage has been done.
