Local car hire & excess

To save money and for environmental reasons, our family has only one car, which dh needs to get to work 25 miles away. There is no public transport option for him. The kids and I make do, staying close to home and only going further afield at weekends when we have the car.

However, I'm really dreading the summer hols this year, as it is very difficult to keep a 3 and 6 year old entertained for 6 weeks in a small, semi-rural town with no leisure facilities and poor public transport links. I'm looking into hiring a car for 4 or 6 weeks of the holiday.

Enterprise have reasonable rates at £13 a day for a small car, but I'm worried about the £500 excess. I know there are companies which offer stand-alone excess cover but they don't offer it for cars rented within 150km of your home address so that's no use for me :-( Any ideas or suggestions would be very gratefully received.
