Slate floor tiles

Hi
I'm thinking about getting slate tiles fitted in the kitchen and conservatory floor. What's the general view to MSer's who've considered or have them? Are they hard wearing? Any tips or would you recommend other natural stone floor tiles?
thanks in advance for any replys!

slate is great but they do require sealing and the, maintained over time, go for better quality to ensure a reasonably consistent thickness0

We considered this for our new house but dismissed it once we discovered the hassle required in sealing & grouting .
We opted for laminate tiles as per link below which are excellant and a lot warmer than natural slate!

We've just laid travertine marble tiles in our kitchen - and they're gorgeous!
It was a bit of a palavar to seal them but we were having our entire kitchen renovated, and did all the sealing/grouting whilst we were waiting for plaster to dry etc.
Word of warning - even though we had doors and windows open, the sealant (Lithofin) is pretty heady stuff and we felt a bit poorly until all the fumes had gone!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -
We had slate tiles years back and they were no problem, although we did seal them as I remember, and OH is like greased lightning with a mop.

I've also been looking at slate tiles - but was also advise dthey are high maintenance (sealing etc) and the guy we aske dto quote suggeseted Karndean (have another post asking for views in this!) its expensive but realistice (apparently) and as its vinyl based its warm and forgiving when I inevitably drop something on it! Went to have a look today and I was impressed! I think it will work out dearer than the slate tiles I had my eye on (Topps Tiles!) but its g'teed for 15 years....
Its worth a look (also its much more shallow - so the level will be lower which suits us!)0
