Didn't Cancel Car Renewal

Help! I didn't 'offically' cancel my car insurance renewal with Direct Line, and just cancelled my direct debit.
They are now saying I owe them £65 as there is a brief period inbetween renewal date and them actually cancelling through being unable to collect my direct debit.

I had another policy with them for a different car, running at the same time. Again only cancelled direct debit as didn't want to renew and had no problems. This was within a month of each other.
Funny how one has a 'problem' and the other doesn't.

Should I pay the money?

  • If you bought elsewhere you can often get them to remove the charge by registering a complaint and sending proof of insurance elsewhere.

Obviously the main problem if that you now need to tell all of your insurers that you've had a policy cancelled and that will sky rocket your premiums and make u fairly untouchable by many

    You do owe it.

Did you renew elsewhere? If so send them proof and ask if they will waive the charge as you did have cover.

Cancelling a dd is not the way to terminate!

Cancel the policy, Pay up and move on.

Lesson for next time, Cancelling payments does not cancel the original contract.
