If New - they would have had to produce the paperwork to have plates on it when you picked up, wouldn't they?

If Used (or pre-registered) - why did you accept the car without seeing the V5? I would have been suspicious as to whether it was stolen or otherwise dodgy...
I need to think of something new here...
  • Never buy a car unless you have seen, and inspected, the V5 certificate.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • Don't understand this.

You should have got a new V5 sent through from DVLA when the seller notified them that the vehicle had a new registered keeper, otherwise you could have a field day with speed cameras/ congestion charge and parking tickets going to previous keeper . This should have been sent direct from Swansea.

The last second hand vehicle I bought the dealer was unable to find the V5 so couldn't tax or deliver the vehicle until they had replaced it. By the same token I lost my V5 and when I tried to change the vehicle the dealer wouldn't complete the deal for a new car until I had replaced it.

Did the 'new' V5 have your name and address on it?
  • There are and were no concerns about the status of the vehicle and the correct licensing. I now have a V5.

Unfortunately this was the first time in a number of years I had bought a new (to me ) vehicle and I trusted the dealer to provide the V5.

I had to travel for two and a half hours to see the vehicle when I purchased it and only when the paper work was being gone through did the salesman mention that the V5 was not available (he gave me a photocopy).

oscarward the DVLA confirmed on the phone that they knew the car was "in trade" so the previous owner's liability appears to have finished.

As mainstreet says "Never buy a car unless you have seen, and inspected, the V5 certificate." This is certainly very good advice even if the company selling the car has credible reasons for not having the V5.
  • Hmmm.

OK If salesman gave a photocopy how did the vehicle get taxed or did it have a previous tax disc?

Did the DVLA allow you to transfer ownership to you without the V5?

I'm surprised a garage could sell a vehicle without a V5, in my experience, selling and buying, I was told it wasn't possible.

    v5 means nothing
car obviously had rent in the window
dealer will have got car from auction with photocopy of log book
if i had been you OP and travelled that far i would have taken a cheque off selling dealer made out to dvla swansea for £25 and just filled in a v62 when i got home

main thing is car has no issues like we hear so often on this site because people would rather save a bob or rita too and not support their local businesses
i didnt even mention lovely sue, sorry sue
